King Hussein bin Talal of Jordan (1935-1999) personified the Hashemite heritage of pragmatism and moderation. The Hashemites, descendants of the Prophet and Cherif of Mecca for more than X centuries, have always had great respect for Jews and Christians as “people of the Book”. King Hussein signed a peace treaty with Israel in 1994 and has been largely committed to a comprehensive settlement of the Arab-Israeli conflict.
