DEPARTURE OF GASPARD
FROM THE PORT OF CRANGANORE

Cranganore, now called Kundugallur, is located on the Malabar coast in southern India. It is described in the first century by Pliny the Elder as the most important trading port in India. It was at the time a very active port for trade with the Roman Empire, especially spices, pepper in particular, and also pearls, diamonds and other gems. Ships passed through the Kingdom of Aksum in Ethiopia, associated with Balthazar King of Arabiam. Jerome Osorius, Bishop of Algarbe (16th century) mentions in his writings that one of the Magi came from Cranganore. His words will be taken up in the “Œuvres Complètes, dictionnaire philosophique” of Voltaire (18th c.)
