In the 15th century, a series of conspiracies, intrigues, and murders within the Nasrid dynasty weakened the power. Nine emirs succeeded each other, many of them reigning for only a few years and then being deposed. Most will end up assassinated. In 1432, Emir Yusuf IV was in power for less than a year. His sister, Citi Meriem, was married to Pedro Venegas de Cordoba, son of a Christian nobleman, Egas Venegas, Lord of Luque. Pedro Venegas de Cordoba was captured at the age of 8 and was taken to Nasrid territory. He was converted to Islam and took the name of Ridwan Bannigas (in Arabic, son of Egas). He became an influential figure through his marriage and conspired, thanks to his contacts at the court of Castile, to put his brother-in-law Yusuf IV on the throne.
