Granada served as a refuge for many who felt threatened. In 1367, Emir Muhammad V, during military operations, took with him 300 Jewish families in order to spare them the torments of Christian repression. In 1391, many cities in the kingdoms of Castile and Aragon, from Seville to Barcelona, were the scene of pogroms. When they could, the threatened Jews moved to the kingdom of Granada. The establishment of the Inquisition in 1481 brought a similar influx of Jewish converts to Christianity, who were the main target of the terrible tribunal.
