\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tJoseph the Indian was a priest in Malabar who left his mark on the history of medieval Christianity. Documents in the Vatican library show that the Christians of India sent three men, Joseph and two others, to go to the Pope to be consecrated bishops. In 1500, the King of Portugal sent a fleet of 12 ships to Malabar. In Cochin, the priest Joseph embarked on the ship of the Portuguese Admiral Pedro Alvarez Cabral on January 10, 1501 from India to Lisbon. From Lisbon, Joseph went to Rome in January 1502, with the help of the King of Portugal, where he had an audience with Pope Alexander VI. In 1506, the Papacy published a book, “The Travels of Joseph the Indian.” This was the first time a non-European, living on the spot, testified about the history of Christianity in India.
